Craft Hope….Project 8: Gulf Coast Oil Spill…..

Craft Hope Spreading seeds of hope one stitch at a time

Craft Hope’s latest project is to work with “The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, the Audubon Nature Institute, and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge to assist them in their efforts in caring for and cleaning oiled marine mammals, mostly dolphins, other marine mammals, birds, and sea turtles. Dolphins are naturally curious and have been swimming toward the oil plumes to investigate… and that curiosity gets them in a lot of trouble against the oil slick.”

This is the easiest project Craft Hope has done..it is simple..anyone can do it…..you can get your kids involved…you can do it in ten minutes…yet, it will make a great difference!

All they are asking for is cloths or rags, made from cotton, sizes 10 x 10 inches or 14 x 27 inches…..that’s it..simple..nothing fancy…get a towel, cut it up and send it off!  If you want to knit..then knit them….if you want to sew them…then sew them…..It is that easy!

Check out the Craft Hope website to get more information!  The mailman just took my package away…it’s heading for Florida!  Every little bit counts!

I’m giving away a $25.00 gift certificate to my Etsy shop!!!

Mailboxes and letters…..

One of the River’s favorite things to do is to send and receive letters and items!  We have two mailboxes that we got from the dollar store….one is hers and one is for the family.  They have been decorated over and over again.  She loves to put little notes, drawings and items in the mailbox for the family, put the flag up and wait……until she receives something in return!  The other day, she wrote a little note to her daddy and put it in the family mailbox.  The next day she received a lollipop in her mailbox!  So, she promptly wrote her daddy MANY little notes…..hoping for you know what!

Now, normally she doesn’t receive candy in the mailbox, normally it is just little pictures, notes or stickers.  She loves sitting down and thinking about who she is going to send something to……and the anticipation of waiting for them to receive it and send something in return is just too exciting!

Gifts for Gram…..

River’s grandmother is blind, so we are always trying to come up with neat little gifts to make that are appropriate.  Whenever River draws a picture for Gram, I go over it with glue or puffy paint.  Sometimes she just draws directly with either one.  Sometimes she glues buttons, pom poms and other objects onto paper.  Today, Gram is in the hospital, so River wanted to do something extra special.  We gave it some thought and came up with the idea of a little stuffed animal.

River decided she wanted to make a bunny stuffed animal.  So, she drew the design on a piece of paper.  Then I cut it out.

Then River picked out some felt and we cut that out together.

Then River picked out some button eyes and helped sew them on!  When she realized that she was actually doing it, she got so excited!

River picked out some fringe that she wanted to add as hair and then she helped cut out some ear shapes.

Because we like to get as many senses as possible involved in the project, River thought it would be fun to add some “crinkle” stuff to the inside.  So we searched around for something that crinkled and found an old plastic table cloth that I had saved as a drop cloth.  We cut it into some small pieces and River stuffed it in.

Then, she closed her eyes to see how the stuffed bunny would “feel” to Gram.  She decided that is had lots of great “stuff” to feel…so we called it done!  She was so proud of what she had made..and she couldn’t wait to give it to her Gram…and her Gram loved it!

Painting a Mural…..

My latest mural is coming along quickly.  It is so much smaller than the other one…..I can do just a bit of work and it makes a difference (have I said that before?)!  Did you ever want to paint a mural on one of your walls, but thought you couldn’t do it?  Well, you should just go for it!  I start out by thinking about which wall I would like to paint..maybe start off small..in a bathroom or somewhere like that.  Then, I think about what I would like to paint.  Usually, I find a picture in a children’s book or magazine….there are so many incredible images!

Then, I scan the image and load it onto my computer.  I have a Panasonic LCD Projector that I use…but you don’t have to use one of those…you could use a simple projector..I have one of those too…a Design Master Projector, which works great.  The only difference is that I can use the Panasonic LCD projector in the daytime..I don’t have to wait until it is dark outside, which I have to do with the Design Master projector.

Then, I set up the projector and my laptop and position the picture.  And I draw out the design using a pencil…very lightly.  This sets your mural up so that you are ready to paint.

Then you get started on the painting, which I think is the fun part…seeing the mural come to life!  Sometimes your pencil lines disappear when you paint, but they are meant as guide lines only.  When I am finished painting, I usually outline everything using black paint, or my new best friend….a Sharpie paint pen!!  These things are my new best friend!

I’ll keep you posted with my progress on this mural!

A boy and his cat….

Where Quinn goes, the cat goes.  If Quinn isn’t home, the cat isn’t happy.  When Quinn sits, the cat sits…and purrs.  I have never seen a cat love someone so much.

When Quinn leaves for school, Shadow Monster (name given to him by Quinn) goes running behind him….not wanting him to leave.

Shadow Monster doesn’t love anyone else in the house as much as Quinn….in fact, I don’t think Shadow Monster loves anyone else!

Sometimes Quinn goes into his room…and forgets about Shadow Monster….that makes the cat very unhappy.  He sits outside his door….waiting…..

We got Shadow Monster when he was a little abandoned kitty….we also have two of his siblings….
