Dying Uggs with Rit Dye…..

So, I found a pair of  Uggs for River at the local thrift shop…for $9.99.  They were quite dirty looking…..and the exact same color as her other pair that I had found at the thrift shop.  So, I decided to dye them bright pink…using Rit dye.  I found this article on ehow about how to dye Ugg boots.   So, we decided to go for it.  The only pink our local shop had was fuchsia……so, that is the color we went with.

First, we filled up a giant bucket with hot water…then we added the dye..and stirred it all up.   Then, we threw in the boots…and stirred and stirred….but they kept floating..so we had to smoosh them and smoosh them and they kept floating.  So, I took a big rock and put it on top of them!

Then I remembered the one step that we forgot….we were supposed to soak the Uggs in regular water first, to get them water-logged…..that would have made things so much easier…because when they were finally water-logged..they floated perfectly…..soles up!!

So, the next time…we’ll make sure we remember to soak the Uggs in regular water first!

We let them soak for 30 minutes..but didn’t think they were dark enough..so we waited another 30 minutes.  When we took them out they looked very pink!

It only took them about 3 sunny days to dry!  I thought it would take much longer for them to get thoroughly dry…especially the fluffy insides.

Well, I think they look great..and River likes them too!  Now, we are going to dye her other pair purple!

  1. Ok, so I don’t have uggs, but I have BearPaws. They’re in pretty bad shape and I’m thinking of dying them black since they already have black stains on them. I am concerned about one thing though.. Is there any way I can protect the tags? They’re already brown and I don’t want the black dye to cover them. Please let me know if there’s a way to prevent my tags from getting dyed.

  2. In my experience….the tags just don’t get as dark as the suede. I know people have tried to cover the tags with tape or cloth, but it just doesn’t work. I would go ahead and dye them….and I really think the tag won’t hold the dye too much. But I really can’t think of a way to dye them without dying the tags. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. (Maybe you could put the dye on with a paintbrush! Never tried this method, but who knows.)

  3. hello! I tried doing this yesterday with my chestnut uggs, and I used a deeper brown, they were looking so faded and definitely not presentable! I look forward to them drying 😀

Also Syrena, try a plain wax crayon over the UGG label tag 🙂

  4. Hey! Here’s a tip. I rubbed the dry painted boots with a metallic scrub sponge and they look just like new.

  5. Wow…great tip..probably works great to make old Uggs..that are just blah ….look better!!

  6. Thank you, Suki! But do I cover the tag with the crayon? Do I ‘draw’ over the tag to cover it? And also, what color should I use?

  7. I think you might be best to use the clear type of crayon. Have you seen those? Sometimes they come in easter egg dying kits. They are a clear wax…maybe if you have a plain clear wax candle…drip some of that wax over the tag..might work better than the crayon idea..just a thought!!

  8. Hi I have been reading about dying the Ugg’s, but I have a pair of metallic Ugg’s I bought on eBay for 50 bucks, I am terrified because they are metallic, it wont come out the same, any advise? cause I hate the way they look now, but I hate to possibly ruin them..??? Thanks so much!! Lori

  9. I personally have never dyed metallic Uggs. If the Uggs are that worn out, they probably don’t have much of the metallic dye left on them. Did you want them to still be metallic or a non metallic color? Maybe try Rite dye with a bit of metallic paint in it. Or how about one of the metallic hair colors? Let me know how they turn out…as you said..they can’t get any worse!! Good luck!!

  10. DO you think this will work with blue Uggs but you want a tie-dye affect … I just want the top of them to be color and keep the remaining blue ?

  11. Sure…I guess you just have to hold them at the level you want them dyed…during the dying process..keeping them even the whole time. Let me know how it turns out!!

  12. Hi, I am just wondering how the dyed UGGs are holding up.
Any dye transfer to River’s socks or feet after wearing them for a prolonged period?

I have a pair of Bearpaw boots in beige that I just dyed black using the Rit liquid dye and a paintbrush to ‘paint’ the dye onto the suede.

I wanted to keep the woolen insides the original color, and to help prevent any dye transfer onto socks, feet and legs. They are drying now, hope that they come out good.

  13. I dyed those uggs a loooonng time ago…but they held up wonderfully. No dye was ever transferred to socks or feet!! I hope you have a successful dying experience!!

  14. Hello, I have about 8 ugly pairs of uggs that I have thrown in the washer, but have hardened from sun drying. After you sun dried these, did they become hard?

  15. They were a bit hardened, but not much..I just brushed them a bit and they softened up nicely. If you Google “How to soften hardened Uggs” you’ll get a lot of great websites with wonderful solutions. Good Luck.

  16. I have orange ugg boots, & I want to dye them black or brown, which color is better, and it is possible? How many bottles do I need?

  17. I have orange uggs and I want to dye them black or brown? Which color is better? How many bottles do I need? Will it all be the same color? Thanks!

  18. I would think one bottle would be more than enough. I’m not sure…but I would think brown would work better…going from orange to brown seems like a better color combination. It should all be the same color. Just make sure you wash them first so they are nice and clean. Good Luck!

  19. What color Rit dye do you think I should use if I want to dye my tan/beige-ish Bearpaws to gray? They colors aren’t very similar, so I feel like if I were just to use gray dye, the color won’t turn out… gray. more like a tan/gray combo, I guess.

  20. I must suggest black…and not soak it for too long…that might be your best bet. Let me know how it turns out.

  21. I personally have never tried the brush on method. Let me know if you find out any information on how it works.

  22. When I wanted to dye my Ugg’s. I found a webiste called http://turtlefeathers.net/. They have a lot of different colors of suede dye and staff were super helpful and had low prices and fast shipping. They were able to tell me exactly everything that I might need from start to finish. They said that the they would be ready to wear in about 12 hours but I waited long so the dye wouldn’t “bleed” on anything. I will be using them again when I dye them a different color.
